Trying new food is a big part of travelling and experiencing new cultures. Here are the nine weirdest things I have eaten during my travels.
Locusts taste after my opinion delicious. A crispy, buttered snack that I ate over and over again in Uganda. I also tried a bigger kind of Locusts in Thailand. That I did not enjoy too much, as the long, thin and sharp leg got stuck in my throat. Hurting me terribly, and almost made not being able to breath. So if you would like to try Locusts on your travel, I recommend the small once.
8. The smallest crabs in the world
In Tarija, located in the south of Bolivia, close to the Argentinian border. They sell the smallest crabs I have ever seen. Taken from a highly polluted fresh water dam. They do not taste almost anything. But are crispy, as you eat everything including the shell.
I know, this one is controversial. However, in Norway we eat whale. Not every day, but we eat it. As well do some other countries in North Europe. It taste good, similar to beef.
6. Chicken big-mac burger
Eating a chicken burger is maybe not so bizarre. However, coming from Europe and going to Mcdonalds you expect that the Big Mac burger is with beef. However, in India there are no beef burgers at Mcdonalds. That being said, living months in the countryside of India being a vegetarian, the chicken big mac was tasting delicious. And I was happy when I first was able to eat some kind of meat again.
5. Cow heart and stomach
Cow hearth taste amazing. This is something we often eat here in Bolivia when we barbecue. The heart is cut up in small pieces and put on a stick. Again, the taste is like beef.
On the other hand, the cow stomach taste like crap. It is the most horrible thing I have tasted. I am not planning to eat that again.
4. Bread full of ants
Living with a local family in Sri Lanka, there were always thousands of ants crawling around on the dinner table. Also entering to the sweet bread. Being polite, I did not see any other option than to eat the bread full of ants. Just trying to think that the bread had some extra proteins.
3. The whole head of the sheep
Another thing we eat in Norway. A delicacy called: Smalahove. The whole head of the sheep head, with teeth, eyes etc. Despite that this dish is from my own country, I think it is pretty disgusting and weird.
2. The tale of the pig
The tale of the pig is a delicacy in Bolivia. And it is eaten in a soup. For, me it is not a presentation that increase the appetite.
Horrible, right? Controversial, as well. It is not something I am proud of, but in Nigeria I ate dog. And the worst thing of it all, while we were eating a lot of dogs were walking around the table. Not aware of that maybe they will the next laying on the plate for dinner. Seeing this, I was unable to enjoy my food, and just ate a few bites.
The meat was very chewy. Furthermore, it was with a very spicy sauce.
What is the weirdest thing you have ever eaten?
