Shit! 200 USD, my credit card, cellphone! All gone. In one second, stolen!
Flight cancelled, due to a volcano eruption. Only option, train for 400 USD back home from Berlin.
Sick! Need for hospital! A bill of 500 USD.
All of these times it was good to have a travel insurance that covered everything.
That being said, this is nothing compared to what can actually go wrong when travelling.
Imagine if you are in an accident. I was once, and I did not have insurance. A car hit my husband and me in high speed, while we were on a motor bike. We flew several meters. Nothing was left of our moped. The driver ran away. But he was luckily taken to the police office by a man in a car that followed him that had seen the accident. The driver was put in prison, while we were on our way to the hospital in an ambulance. The hospital bill we had to pay our self, due to that we did not have insurance.
The good thing was that we had money to pay the hospital. I have read about several people that are stuck abroad because they did not have insurance and was in a serious accident. Furthermore, they do not have money to pay their hospital bill or plane ticket home. Neither do their families at home. Moreover, I know people that have been robbed even in their hotel-room for things worth more than 2000 USD. I also know people where their credit card have been hacked during travel, and over 3000 USD was stolen.
So my point is. Having insurance is super important while travelling. After my motorbike accident, without insurance, I made sure always to be insured during my trips.
In Norway the travel insurance are very expensive, if you plan to travel for more than 3 weeks at the time. Since I am usually staying for several months or years abroad, I could not afford the insurances offered in Norway. I therefore did search for many different options. And the best and cheapest option for my need was: World Nomads.
This travel insurance covers the same as a Norwegian insurance. However, for 6 months of travelling the insurance with World Nomads only 558 USD, covering the whole world. While n insurance with “Europesiske reiseforsikring” that is considered as one of the cheapest, for 6 months cost 1638 USD.

Do you have any stories where you needed your insurance on your travels? Or did not have insurance, but should have had?
