I am far from the best at packing my suitcase for travels, despite a lot of practice. However, I have picked up a few handy tips along the way, and would like to share them so you do not do the same mistakes as me.
Because there are some problems when it comes to packing that I noticed happened over and over again. To make a stop to these problems I had to find some practical and creative solutions that furthermore helped my packing. And here they are:
1. Leaking shampoo and moisturizer
Problem: Many times, when I opened up my luggage after a flight, all my clothes or toiletries where full of shampoo or moisturizer, due to leaks. This is very common due to the air pressure during the flight, so maybe this has happened to you as well?
Solution: To make a stop to this problem, as sticky clothes was not that nice to wear, I started to put liquate bottles in plastic bags before putting them in my luggage. However, they still continued to explode or leak, just inside the bag and not on my stuff.
So, I tried to squeeze the bottles until there was no air inside, and then cap the bottle. After doing so, I never had problems with leaking bottles in my suitcase anymore. This trick works well, as during a flight the expanding air often push the shampoo out of the bottle. But if there is no air in the shampoo bottle, then the changing air pressure outside the bottle does not affect the liquid contents of the bottle, and all of the goop stays in the bottle.
2. Broken souvenirs
Problem: It has also happened that I have bought souvenirs and when I got home they were broken. This was very sad, as some were gifts for friends and family.
Solution: Whenever I buy a souvenir that can be easy broken, I now toss a lot of clothes around the object for protect it. If it is a small object, I put it inside my shoes, with socks around it. Since I started doing so, none of my souvenirs have been broken.
3. Too much luggage
Problem: Normally, I have the problem that I cannot close my suitcase. Usually you find my sitting on it, getting help by my husband or mom to close it.
Solution: When this happen, I try to take a step back, and ask myself, do I need everything that is in the suitcase? Usually there is a pair shoes that can be left at home, and when taking out them the suitcase can be closed easily.
In addition, I always put a band around my suitcase as if the zipper should break this will help keeping the things for not falling out. It is also much easier to recognize my suitcase when picking it up at the airport when I do this, as most suitcases are black just like mine.
4. Delayed luggage or spill on clothes
Problem: One time, my luggage did not arrive before three days after me. I was without any clothes. It also happened one time, that I spilled my soda all over me on the flight, sitting there in a t-shirt and pants full of coca cola.
Solution: I always pack a change of clothes in my hand luggage. A pair of underwear’s, socks, pants, t-shirt and a light sweater. This way when this happens I always have the possibility to change.
5. Forgetting essential things at home
Problem: Many times when I arrived to my destination, I figured out that I had forgotten things like my charger to the camera, my toothbrush, or other essential things at home.
Solution: For not forget anything, I have started to write a list (after seeing my dad do so) of everything I need to bring. I do this some days in advance, so that I have time to add to the list if I have forgotten to write something down. After packing, I cross out everything on the list that I have packed, and I get an overview of the things I have missed so that I can pack them as well.
