Today it is exactly one year since I started Places People Stories. Wow, time passes fast! There are many things that I had no idea about then, but I have learned on the way. So here are the top lessons that blogging have thought me, so far.
You do not need to post every day to have a successful blog
When I first started my blog I read many “How to make a successful blog” articles. In almost every one of them it advised to post a new post every day. This for get more readers. And I did so, in the beginning, before I realized that this was not necessary. To post a couple of times per week was as sufficient. This because if you post too often, many of your readers will not have time to keep up with you. If you do not post too often they seems to read your posts more in detail than if you post every day.
Creative is the best
I have found that many bloggers out there just copy the content of other bloggers. You will never have a popular blog if doing this. Try to be creative and come up with new topics and point of veiws.
Yes, it takes 6 months to start earn money
In the many “how to earn money blogging” articles I read when starting blogging, it said it would take around 6 months to start earning money. And it did, at least for me. My first paid post I got after exactly 6 months of blogging. Though I am still very careful saying yes to these kind of requests.
But you will never get rich by blogging
But even if you can earn some money blogging, you will never get rich doing so. That I promise you. Most travel bloggers have another job besides, to be able to live. So do I. Mostly what you earn being a travel blogger is free hotel stays, free meals at resturants and free entry to tourist attractions.
The competition is very high
When I started to blog, I had no idea that there were so many travel blogs out there. I had no idea that the competition was so high. I just had tousands of other bloggers to compete with, that had comed up with this genious idea to write about their travels before me. Many of them have already been blogging for 7 years. It is hard to stand out in that crowd.
But do not compare yourself with other blogs
But even if there are so many other travel blogs out there, try not to compare yourself with them. In the beginning I was doing so all the time, and it was not so good. I saw them having hundred tousand followers, and I was wondering why I did not have as many. I also get some emails and comments about people feeling depressed seeing more successful blogs as they know they will never be as succesful with their. But remember that most of these bloggers have been blogging for many years, and it took time for them to be popular as well.
Most of the work having a blog is not writing posts on the blog
Even if you might think so, most of the time for a blogger do not goes to write posts on his or her own blog. It goes to write guest posts for others. To design the website, and updating it, so it looks great all the time. Answering comments on the blog and updating social media like facebook and twitter takes a lot of time as well. Reading other blogs, and connecting with other bloggers is also a big part of being a blogger.
It is hard hard work
I had no idea that it would be this much hard work when I started the blog. Because it is a lot of work, and tousands of hours in front of the laptop. So you have to love what you do.
Be thankful for all support and followers
The blog would not be possible without everyone that have supported me and all my dear followers. I would therefore like to thank everyone that follow this blog! I appreciate it a million! Without you, I would not be able to do it! And having from 3000 to 5000 monthly followers after just one year of blogging, is much more than I could have ever asked for. I love you all!
