Usually when I travel I do not stay at the most luxuries hotels, eat gourmet food or drink the best wines. I stay with locals, in budget hotels or dorms. But on my first press trip with Nordic Nomads and Visit Sweden this week, I got to stay at luxurious hotels. One of them was Gullmarsstrand* in Fiskebäckskil. It was a big contrast of how I usually stay when out travelling.
About the stay I had mixed feelings. It felt really good, being treated like a queen. With excellent service, delicious three course meal made by top chefs, served with great red and white wine. We had some really relaxing hours in the spa with champagne. I had a big clean room just for me, with a soft bed. When sitting on the balcony outside the room with beautiful view over the sea, drinking more champagne and eating the chocolate they had left as an extra treat in the room, I was thinking; this is life! Life is good! Could life get any better!? Because there and then life felt pretty dam perfect!
But at the same time, I felt a bit bad. I know that in many of the countries I have lived in, most people would have to work for months to afford one night in such a nice hotel. They will never experience what I did. Though I really wish they could!
But should this stop us in treating us something extra like a couple of nights in a luxurious hotel once in a while? At least for me, these days, was very much needed. I did not have to worry about anything. When I left, I had filled up my batteries. I had a lot of energy and motivation which lacked before the trip. Now, I am less stressed.
At the same time, we cannot compare us with those that never will have the same possibilities. Salaries and the standard of living is higher here in the west. In addition, I realize that you do not hurt anyone by living comfortable a few days, as I did at Gullmarsstrand*. Furthermore, think about all the jobs we contribute to create when staying in nice hotels. All the people involved, in making the amazing food we ate for example. Everything from taking up the fish, growing the vegetables, to preparing and serving it. If we did not stay and eat there, many people would not have a job to go to. What I really liked at the Restaurant G at Gullmarsstrand was that they just use local ingredients. This help and support local farmers and fishermen’s in West Sweden.
And once in a while I think we all deserve a little bit extra. We do deserve to be treated like queens or kings. We all have our problems and struggles, wherever we live. Whether it is Norway or Ghana. So I think that I will try to treat myself more of some luxury the next times I am out traveling as well. I think it is good for me not having to worry about anything, just relaxing and enjoying….
Do you think that it is fine to once in a while treat yourself with luxury (like a great hotel) when out travelling?
