I have a dream to visit all countries in the world. And this is how I plan to make this dream into reality.
For some this might sound pretty impossible. But I think it is possible. A few have already proved that it is.
Of course there are many challenges related to this mission. It can be legal limits, like being hard to get some visas. Some countries are very dangerous to visit. There are countries you will not be let into if you have previously visit one of their enemy countries. This is just to mention some of the challenges I will meet on the way to this goal.
Some may also argue that quality is better than quantity. I do agree, and I have to say that I have experienced this quality side of it all. I lived three years in Bolivia, 6 months in Nigeria, 1 month in Cuba, 2 months in India, 1 month in Sri Lanka, and 2 months in New York. Many of the places I have visited I have travelled in for longer times as well. I have never rushed through places, and I do not plan to do so even if I go for all the countries in the world.
Today, I have visited 53 different countries. There are 193 countries in the world (depending on how counted). However, this is the number most of the current World Almanacs use. This mean that I still have 140 to go.
If I visit five new countries every year, it will take me 28 more years to accomplish the goal. Which will mean that I will be done by the age of 55.
For me I think that five new countries per year is possible even while being in a fulltime job, and having a family. I know that some years it might not be possible to visit as many as five, and other it might be possible to visit more. But as a general I think five new countries per year is realistic. With a fulltime job on the side, I do not see any problems reaching this goal economical either as long as making some prioritizations.
It might be possible to take of a year in the future and travel full-time as well. If so many more countries will be seen in one year, and the goal could be reach earlier.
I could have taken a year or two off now, for reach the goal. However, to reach such a goal over so many year I also see many advantages from. One of them is that you are more unlikely to get a travel burnout. The other thing is that situations in different countries can change. A country that is dangerous today, might not be as dangerous in 20 years from now. It could also be the other way around of course.
It is not like this that I HAVE TO make this by the age of 55. If I am 70 the year I have visit all countries in the world I would be proud. If something comes in way and makes it impossible, I will understand as well.
But it is a dream. And I can see that dream be reality – step by step.
