Traveling to Europe during winter might be shockingly cold. But in Norway we have a quote: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing”. So here are some tips for how to keep warm on travels in Northern Europe during winter.
Use Terminal or wool underwear
If there are several minus degrees outside I always use long wool underwear under my clothes. If it is not that cold I use the terminal long underwear. This will help you keep warm.
Use wool socks. Do not have normal cotton socks under, then the wool socks will have little effect. It is always important to have the wool into your body.
Use many layers
Have several layers of normal clothes over the wool and there should be some air between the layers.
Big warm winter coat
Use a big warm winter coat on top of that.
Boots not shoes
Use booths and not normal shoes. I have done this mistake myself when I used converse in 22 minus degrees. I had wool socks inside. However, this helped little as the shoes were not good for the cold.
Use warm gloves, a hat and a scarf. The head, neck and the ankles are some of the places where it is most important to keep warm. They say that as much as 45 percent of body heat are lost through your head, so going out without a hat is not a good idea.
I have personally experienced that when not dressing for keeping warm during travels, it might ruin your whole vacation and it is hard to enjoy. You can easily become sick and I have experience that as well, and that for sure ruin the trip! But when using these tips I always keep warm and I can enjoy my travels. When I travelled to Tallinn and Helsinki two months ago it was minus 16 degrees celsius with wind, but I stayed warm and had a great trip.
Do you have any tips on how to keep warm when travelling to cold places during winter? Or do you have any experiences where you maybe should have dressed better?
