About

Hi! I’m Hanne. A twenty-something travel junkie from Norway. So far, I have been to over 60 countries. Still, many more to go! In this blog I write a bit differently related to travel than the common “10 things to do in Bangkok/Paris/Madrid”, you name it! I focus more on the not so obvious, and share stories and experiences about places I have been and people I have met during 5 years of travels.

bunadnorge2

Why the name Places People Stories?

What I love the most about travelling, is the people I meet on the way. Getting to know local cultures, their stories, and ways. I usually stay over time in one place, therefore travelling local and sustainable. My experience is that most tourist and travelers do not mix too much with the local people, and furthermore write their traveling blogs about their one day visit to the pyramids in Cairo, Machu Picchu, or Angkor Wat.

A bit more about me and my background; I have a bachelors in Sociology and master’s in Development Management. I have worked in Development projects in Nigeria, Norway, India, and the US. Furthermore, I worked one and a half year as the director of a foundation named “Yo voy a Ti” in Bolivia. I am also the founder of “Yo voy a Ti” in Uganda.  I am currently working as bilingual freelancer, doing this blog and different assignments for Norwegian media.

Hi Hanne! I’m so glad to have discovered you — your blog is a unique perspective of travel. “Getting to know local cultures, their stories, and ways” describes my enjoyment of the travels I’ve experienced. I haven’t been able to dive as deeply into those as I’d like, but have scratched the surface and am always affected by the real people I meet … and living in your Norway for seven years has given me a better appreciation for what I’m missing in other countries by NOT being able to live there and more fully explore. Reading your observations will help to fill in my cultural gaps.

Hyggelig å møte deg!

Thank you for following our blog. Through our photography and words we hope to inspire others to get out and see the world. And perhaps through those travels the world will become a smaller and less threatening place as we discover the many kindred spirits who share our own hopes and aspirations. As Mark Twain said, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.”

It’s never too early or late to discover and follow your heart. Make time for the people, causes or work you truly care about. Cheers, Wooly and Raeski.

There are so very many blogs that highlight gorgeous travel photos and spectacular tourist destinations – all lovely to view. I adore your approach. It’s so very real and helps one get to know the ‘real’ place, not just the pretty curtains on the windows. Beyond breathtaking scenery, places are about the peoples or communities who thrive or survive there.
You are an amazing person and have accomplished so much already – it’s quite wonderful knowing out there – are real people like you.

Thank you for stopping by my blog. Reading some of your travel posts has brought back lots of memories. I used to help medical missionaries in Indochina, Indonesia & Sri-Lanka & yes, I agree with you – once locals trust you to share thoughts & food, you enter a whole different level of traveling. As my blog is about “permaculture & food foresting” I have only posted 1 page on that kind of travel (http://temasekgarden.com/the-golden-triangle/) but I’d like to follow your blog & see how things are done today.
May all your trips go smoothly & I hope you find happiness, as much as you bring to the locals of lands you visit.

I’m glad your interest in “The USA: landscapes and urban spaces” led me to your blog. You have done some astounding travel already and, I can tell, often under very difficult circumstances and conditions (not least, having to deal so often with sexual harassment). Take care! I shall be back because there are many posts I must still examine.
P.S. Do examine “In search of unusual destinations” for posts which go beyond “merely” the USA. Best wishes, Phil.

Dear Hanne,

My name is Joyce and I work for ExpatFinder.com.
ExpatFinder.com is a free one stop website for people preparing to move or working and living overseas. We provide a myriad of services for expatriates and we have over 2,000 articles to help and support the people moving around the world and we are now creating an interview section to help the expats with real life experiences!
We quite enjoy your blog about living in Bolivia, it is very interesting and informative. Would it be possible to interview you to further share some of your tips and feature some of your first hand experience as an Expat and your interview will be published on our Expat Interview section as a guide for our expat readers. The questions are mainly about the day to day lifestyle of an expat. If it would be possible, could you also send some photographs that we can use?
Of course, if you accept, we can add a link to your blog or some of your website.
The questions are enclosed, feel free to respond freely. You can return the doc with your answers if you accept this invitation.
Thanks in advance and do let me know if you prefer other means to conduct this interview and we would be happy to accommodate your terms.

Best regards,
Joyce

I am sure you will love it! It is such an unique and amazing country. The salt desert of Uyuni is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Just let me know if you need any tips or if you have any questions 🙂

Well this year up the US West Coast to Vancouver Canada. Next year – Italy, Austria, Spain, France and maybe more! Any guidance is greatly appreciated! 🙂 And I will be scouring your blog in advance!

placespeoplestories@gmail.com March 13, 2015 at 1:32 pm

Sounds like some great plans! I have never been to US West Coast (just the east) and I have not been to Canada yet (just looked over to it), so I am not sure if I can come with many tips there. But Europe, I can. Just let me know whenever you want if you have any questions, and I will do my best to help 🙂

Hanne;
First of all congratulation for creating this wonderful blog; frankly speaking, still I have not gone through your each and every post; but just going through your this page, I couldn’t resist my self to congratulate for creating such a useful blog; you are absolutely right there are many blogs and most of the blogs publish about the most common things to visit and experience but you are certainly doing remarkable efforts to create your own identity by publishing useful posts.
Wishing you all the best…….
By the way whenever you have spare time please feel free to visit my blog; your visit along with comment will certainly made my day.
Thanks…………………..
